Denville Beautification Volunteers
Denville Beautification volunteers create colorful plantings all over the Township for the enjoyment of local residents. But the flowers also welcome Denville visitors, including migrating butterflies and birds.
– Tucked in among the flood of marigolds under the Clock Tower is a grouping of milkweed, a plant that is absolutely essential to migrating Monarch butterflies but is disappearing due to development. The milkweed’s flowers nurtured the butterflies on their way north in the spring and provided a place to lay their eggs. Now the plants are covered in seed pods, proof of their pollination popularity.
– Monarch caterpillars find nutrition and protection in DBC’s milkweed plantings at Route 10 and Franklin Road. The plant contains a toxin which the caterpillars absorb; predators know this and leave them alone to grow into beautiful orange butterflies.
– In late summer, many animals stock up on nectar for their long journeys south, and DBC’s stunning displays of red canna lilies are a favorite stopover for hummingbirds, who are drawn to the color red.
Want to help make a difference?
Volunteers are always welcome to join in the Beautification Committee’s efforts to make Denville an even better place to live. For more information or to join please contact Irene Stefanacci at 973-625-8300 ext 290 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
During the growing season, Denville Beautification Committee members meet for about 2 hours on Saturday mornings and Wednesday evenings to create beautiful flower plantings in the township’s most heavily traveled areas, creating new displays every year. No experience is necessary, and it’s a great opportunity to learn tips and tricks to make your own garden better.
Volunteer groups are also always welcome. If your scout, school, church or civic group would like to contribute a few hours of satisfying service to the community, please contact the Beautification Committee to arrange a time.
