Emergency worker says she owes her life to Saint Clare Health’s medical team and its award-winning coronary interventional program

Paramedic Megan Bizzaro is trained to treat the symptoms of a heart attack. So when she started having some chest discomfort, she headed straight to the Emergency Department at Saint Clare’s Dover Hospital to get it checked out. As a first responder, Megan was aware of Saint Clare’s reputation for being an award-winning provider of safe, high quality, compassionate care. The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services had awarded the health system its highest possible rating of five stars. In 2018 and 2019, Healthgrades gave Saint Clare’s Health the Patient Safety Excellence Award. Megan felt confident that Saint Clare’s medical professionals would be able to determine the reason for her pain and treat it.

Although Megan wasn’t sure her own symptoms were that serious, the staff at Dover knew how to get to the bottom of things. They persuaded her to stay overnight for observation and undergo additional tests. Even though blood work and an ECG were normal, cardiologist Dr. Sukhjeet Singh remained concerned given Megan’s symptoms. He recommended an emergent cardiac catheterization. The staff transported her to Saint Clare’s Denville Hospital, which Healthgrades named one of America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Coronary Intervention for 2019. That same year, the Denville Hospital also was named among the top 5 percent in the nation for Coronary Interventional Procedures.

The Denville cath lab staff showed Megan why its program had earned national recognition. Dr. Rhuna Shen found Megan’s left anterior descending artery was completely blocked, while her right coronary artery was 80 percent blocked. The next day, Dr. Shen placed three cardiac stents.

“The scary part is that I had absolutely no idea I was sick,” said Megan. “They call the blockage I had the widow maker. My Saint Clare’s family saved my life.”

Today, cardiac rehab professionals are assisting Megan on her journey back to full health so she can continue to save the lives of others in her community.

Megan expressed her gratitude that the staff didn’t just let her pack up and go home when she mistook heart attack symptoms for acid reflux or soreness.

“It’s very apparent that the staff at Saint Clare’s Health is dedicated to providing the very best care,” she said. “I thank them all from the bottom of my heart.”
