Caroline Fillmore: A Life Rooted in Morristown

Caroline Fillmore

Caroline Carmichael Fillmore, born on October 21, 1813, in Morristown, New Jersey, was a woman of wealth and influence, remembered primarily as the second wife of former U.S. President Millard Fillmore. Her early years were shaped by her family’s prominence—her father, Charles Carmichael, was a successful merchant, and she grew up in an environment that valued education and social standing.

Education

Caroline attended a finishing school in New York, preparing her for the refined circles she would later navigate. Her first marriage was to Ezekiel C. McIntosh, a key figure in the development of the Mohawk and Hudson Railroad. The couple was married in Morristown, a place that remained significant in her life. Upon his passing, Caroline inherited a considerable fortune, which later became a central factor in her second marriage.

Marriage

After a brief courtship in 1858, she wed Millard Fillmore in Albany, New York. Their marriage was governed by a prenuptial agreement that granted Fillmore complete financial control over her estate. Despite her wealth, Caroline’s later years were marked by personal struggles, particularly after Fillmore’s death in 1874. She spent her final years in declining health and passed away on August 11, 1881, in Buffalo, New York, where she was laid to rest alongside her husband.

Caroline Fillmore Roots

Though much of her life remains shrouded in history, Caroline’s roots in Morristown, New Jersey, serve as a reminder of her deep ties to the community. Her story reflects both the privileges and challenges faced by women of her era, particularly those navigating wealth, marriage, and societal expectations.
